Linux Magazine DVD

We are proud to bring you Xandros Desktop 3.0 as this month's Linux Magazine DVD. The Linux Magazine Xandros Desktop 3.0 DVD contains a full, permanent version of Xandros Desktop OS. The DVD enclosed with this issue includes elements of the open circulation Xandros Desktop 3.0 release, along with many applications from the Xandros Deluxe Edition.

Xandros Desktop OS is descended from Corel Linux OS. In recent years, the company has focused on providing a simple and powerful desktop system with low cost of ownership. Xandros Desktop 3.0 continues that desktop focus.

The Xandros developers designed Xandros Desktop OS to provide an easy migration path for Windows users, but native Linux users will also have an easy time finding their way around Xandros. The system comes with a Xandros-enhanced version of KDE 3.3. You'll find all the best Linux desktop applications, such as OpenOffice.org 1.1, Firefox 1.0, GIMP 2.0.5, and Kontact 3.3.0, along with the Xandros File Manager and other enhancements. Xandros Desktop OS supports Firewire and USB 2.0, as well as 802.11b wireless networking.

Debian Power

Xandros is based on the long awaited and much anticipated Debian 3.1 "Sarge" release. The brand new Sarge release is still in testing at the time of this release, but Xandros froze a snapshot of Sarge as a basis for Xandros Desktop 3.

The Xandros team condensed and simplified Debian, adding their own extras and featuring the best Open Source applications to bring you a simple and practical desktop system.

Xandros File Manager

The acclaimed Xandros File Manager (XFM) is a special application found only on Xandros systems. Like Konqueror and similar tools, XFM is a web browser and file management utility rolled into one. Xandros calls this innovative tool "the heart and soul of your daily desktop experience."

XFM lets you share files with Windows and Unix systems through a single, convenient user interface. You can drag and drop files to create music CDs and create archives with a single click. New with Xandros Desktop Desktop 3.0 is a feature that lets you recursively apply file property changes to subdirectories.

Installation

Xandros requires a Pentium 2-4 or AMD Duron, Athlon. Athlon XP, or Athlon MP processor; 64 MB RAM (128 recommended); and 1 GB disk space (2 GB recommended).

To install the Linux Magazine Xandros Desktop 3.0 DVD on your hard disk, follow these simple instructions:

  1. Put the DVD into your DVD drive and reboot your computer.
  1. Follow the installation steps provided by the Xandros installer.
  1. After you successfully complete the base installation, you'll find a Xandros Networks icon on your desktop - click on the Xandros Networks icon.
  1. In the Xandros Networks window, select Edit | Set Application Source.
  1. In the Set Application Sources dialog box (Figure 2), check the box labeled CD-ROM drive and deselect all other sources. This step ensures that the installation will only access files on your DVD drive and won't connect to the Internet.
  1. After you click on the OK button, Xandros Networks automatically refreshes the application list. To install an application just click on it.

Xandros offers a simple and practical desktop with the power of Debian and lots of extras. With this DVD, you'll receive the Xandros OS plus extra applications from the Xandros Deluxe application CD.
